The education system in an area is very important for a number of reasons beyond the obvious. Of course, parents of children in school have a natural concern for the quality of the education that their children are likely to receive. But, moving into an area with great schools does more than help your children. The quality of an area's schools is very important in how it impacts the value of your home and your ability to sell your home when that time comes. Also, the educational system in an area is important to the overall economy of the area. Charleston's leadership has recognized this fact for some time. Plus, the State of South Carolina has received significant recognition for its rate of progress in the area of education and in many ways has led the country in innovation. The Greater Charleston Area is composed of four separate school districts. Berkeley County School District, Dorchester County School District Two and Four, and Charleston County School District makeup these four distinct districts. Charleston County is by far the largest of the three.
In the greater Charleston area, there over 88,000 students in over 134 schools. Another 11,200 students are rolled in one of Charleston's 75 private and parochial schools.
Charleston is the second-largest school system in South Carolina and one of the areas top employers with over 3000 teachers.

District Sites: Dorchester County Schools Charleston County Schools Berkeley County Schools The Charleston County School District is divided into eight constituent districts. Within these districts are 42 elementary schools, 13 middle schools, eight high schools, 12 magnet schools (such as the award winning Charleston School of the Arts) , and four charter schools educating approximately 48,500 students. Thanks to a renewed commitment to reading and math, students in Charleston County made significant gains on the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test in grades three through eight and the SAT in high school. The district has seen results from a five-year, $365 million building program that includes the four new high schools, two new elementary schools as well as school renovation and additions touching every community that is served. Charleston County School District has embraced accountability as the key to effective public education. Dorchester District Two has nine elementary schools, five middle schools, and two high schools including Summerville High School, the largest high school in the State of South Carolina.
Dorchester School District Two was selected by Money magazine as one of the top 100 school districts in the nation. Dorchester School District Two is supported by more than 400 business partnerships and over 2500 volunteers. Five schools in Dorchester District Two have been named, "Palmetto's Finest"( an annual award given to the school recognized as being the very best of all schools in South Carolina) and three have been recognized as National Blue RibbonSchools. Berkely County is a very large area with much room to grow - and it is growing. New schools are being built to support this strong growth. Just one visit to one of the newest schools, such as Daniel Island Island Elementary, an amazing cutting edge facility, and you will recognize how important education is to the citizens of Berkeley County. I am frequently asked, '...where is the best place to live in order for my child to receive the highest quality of education' . The most popular answer to that question may be misleading. For many years the general perception has been that Dorchester County District Two produces the most successful students. As a former teacher with two children currently in public elementary school and a wife who also teaches, I'm very interested and involved in the education system here. In my opinion, the answer to that question is more complex. I believe it makes more sense to look at each school on an individual basis - prior to making a judgment call.
Quite a few schools in Charleston County are among the very best in the State. As Charleston County has one of the largest school districts in the entire country, you would expect to find schools at both ends of the effectiveness spectrum. So, before you make a decision about where to buy your home, be sure that you spend the time to evaluate the schools individually. Of course, I will be more than happy to help you with that.
